What happens when imagination, strategy and friendship come together around a table?

You get Magic: The Gathering!

Every second Wednesday, from 1:30pm to 6:00pm, participants come together at our Gosnells office to share their love of this popular trading card game. It is an afternoon filled with strategy, creativity, friendly competition, plenty of conversation and, of course, some exciting battles between cards!

But Magic: The Gathering is much more than simply playing a card game. Behind every deck is a little bit of imagination and a lot of decision-making. Players need to think ahead, develop strategies, remember rules and adapt their approach depending on what happens during the game.

 Building Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Magic encourages players to think strategically and consider different possibilities before making a move. Players learn to plan ahead, solve problems and make decisions based on the situation in front of them.

And sometimes, the best-laid plan doesn’t work! That’s when players need to adapt, try something different and keep going. These are valuable skills that can be transferred into everyday situations.

 Imagination and Creativity

One of the most exciting things about Magic is the world behind the cards. With fantastical creatures, characters, stories and different magical worlds, the game encourages participants to use their imagination and creativity.

Building a deck also allows players to make choices based on their own interests and playing style. Everyone can create something that feels uniquely theirs.

 Communication and Connection

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits is the opportunity to connect with others.

Playing together creates a natural reason to talk, share ideas, explain strategies, ask questions and celebrate each other’s victories. For participants who may find social interactions challenging in other settings, having a shared interest can provide an easy and enjoyable way to start conversations and build relationships.

 Friendship, Cooperation and Community

Although Magic involves friendly competition, players also learn the importance of taking turns, respecting other players, following shared rules and being a good sport.

Participants can share cards, help each other understand the game and learn from more experienced players. Over time, these interactions can develop into genuine friendships and a stronger sense of belonging.

Most importantly, Magic gives participants a space where they can come together around something they genuinely enjoy. There is laughter, excitement, unexpected victories, dramatic moves—and occasionally a little friendly rivalry!

At 4LifeSkills, we believe that activities should be meaningful and fun. When participants are engaged in something they enjoy, they are naturally given opportunities to practise communication, decision-making, problem-solving, creativity and social skills.

So, if you’re at our Gosnells office every second Wednesday between 1:30pm and 6:00pm, you might just hear someone say:

“I cast…”

And that’s when you know the game is on!
