At 4lifeskills, we believe that independence is built through the everyday things we do. Taking responsibility for tasks at home can be a meaningful way for participants to develop practical skills, confidence and a greater sense of self-sufficiency.

Recently, Kelly worked alongside her support worker, Sue, to practise a range of everyday household skills. Together, they focused on giving Kelly opportunities to take responsibility for different parts of her daily routine, from organising her bedroom and preparing her breakfast to cooking her own lunch and cleaning up afterwards.

These may seem like simple tasks, but they are important skills for everyday independence. By taking an active role in her home environment, Kelly had the opportunity to practise planning, organisation, meal preparation, household responsibilities and following routines.

Having the opportunity to complete tasks independently can also help participants recognise what they are capable of doing for themselves. With the right level of support and encouragement, they can gradually build confidence in making decisions, solving everyday problems and taking responsibility for their own routines.

For Kelly, each task was another opportunity to practise skills that contribute to her personal goals. Her support worker Sue provided guidance and encouragement while allowing Kelly to take the lead and complete tasks herself wherever possible.

At 4lifeskills, we understand that independence looks different for everyone. Our role is to encourage participants to learn, practise and build confidence at their own pace, while developing skills that are meaningful to their individual goals and everyday lives.

Sometimes, independence starts with something as simple as making your own breakfast, preparing lunch, keeping your room organised or cleaning up after yourself. Small responsibilities can lead to big steps towards confidence, choice and self-sufficiency.
