Independence is built through everyday experiences, and learning how to use public transport is an important step towards having greater choice and confidence in the community.

Jessica recently practised using public transport with the support of her support worker. While Jessica was responsible for navigating the journey, her support worker was there to provide encouragement, guidance and assistance whenever it was needed. This approach gives participants the opportunity to take the lead while knowing that support is available when they need it.

Learning to use public transport involves much more than simply getting from one place to another. Participants develop important navigation and orientation skills by learning how to read signs, recognise stops and stations, follow routes, understand timetables and identify where they need to get off. These skills can help build confidence when travelling to familiar places and, over time, exploring new destinations.

Public transport training also creates opportunities to develop money-management skills. Purchasing tickets, understanding fares, managing a travel card or planning the cost of a journey can all contribute to greater confidence with budgeting and making everyday financial decisions.

There is also an important problem-solving element. Journeys do not always go exactly as planned, and learning what to do when a bus is delayed, a train is missed or the wrong route is taken can help participants develop resilience and confidence in responding to unexpected situations.

For Jessica, having the opportunity to practise these skills in a real environment is another step towards greater independence. The role of her support worker is not to do the journey for her, but to provide the right level of support and encouragement so Jessica can learn, make decisions and gradually become more confident in doing things for herself.

At 4lifeskills, we believe that practical skills gained through everyday experiences can make a meaningful difference to a person’s independence. Travel training supports participants to have greater freedom, make their own choices and feel more confident participating in their community.

Because knowing how to get where you want to go can be an important part of choosing where you want to go next.
