Our participants recently took part in a practical travel training experience at the airport, supported by their support workers. The day provided a wonderful opportunity to practise public transport skills, problem-solving, communication and independence in a real-world environment.
Together, participants travelled to the airport using public transport, with support from their support workers along the way. The experience included learning what to do when they accidentally got on the wrong train and, importantly, how to recognise when they needed assistance and confidently ask for help.
These moments are valuable learning opportunities. While getting on the wrong train may not have been part of the plan, it gave participants the chance to practise problem-solving in a safe and supportive environment. Learning how to ask for directions, communicate with others and find a solution when something unexpected happens are important skills that can be used in many everyday situations.
Once at the airport, the group headed to the viewing area, where they enjoyed watching planes arrive and take off. This also provided an opportunity to relax, enjoy the experience and spend time together while being part of the wider community.
Activities like this are an important part of developing independence. Travelling independently requires a combination of skills, including planning, reading signs, understanding transport routes, managing time, communicating with others and responding to unexpected situations.
Our support workers play a key role by providing encouragement and guidance while allowing participants to take the lead wherever possible. The goal is not simply to get from one place to another, but to give participants the opportunity to practise skills, make decisions and build confidence through real-life experiences.
At 4lifeskills, we believe that everyday experiences can become meaningful opportunities for growth. Each journey, challenge and successful solution helps participants discover that they are capable of doing more, building greater confidence and taking another step towards independence.
