Hitting Aces and Building Confidence: Serving Up Smiles on the Tennis Court!

Every 2nd Wednesday of the month, Alex, Kirsty, Liam, Michelle, Nathan, Natalie, Nick, and Renee, gather at the Baldivis Recreation Centre for a unique and rewarding tennis experience. This isn’t your typical competitive match, but rather a space for individuals with disabilities to learn, grow, and have fun, all while reaping significant health benefits.

Among the enthusiastic participants are Nathan and Nick, who have been consistently impressive with their dedication and progress. While the group is still refining their skills and hasn’t quite reached individual match level, both Nathan and Nick have demonstrated remarkable improvement in mastering various tennis techniques. Their physical activity levels have increased significantly, and their coordination and form have become noticeably more refined.

“It’s been amazing to see Nathan and Nick come out of their shells and become more confident on the court,” says Corrine, their dedicated tennis coach from the South Mandurah Tennis Club. “They consistently work hard and are always eager to learn new skills.”

The sessions begin at 10.00am with a warm-up, followed by a series of engaging exercises designed to teach essential movements and techniques. These exercises not only improve tennis skills but also contribute to overall physical well-being through increased cardiovascular health, flexibility, and muscle strength.

Corrine and Belinda, the coaches, go the extra mile, traveling all the way to Baldivis to cater to our group, a gesture that’s deeply appreciated by everyone involved. The sessions wrap up at 11.30 am with a refreshing fruit break, ensuring everyone stays hydrated and energised throughout the session.

Michelle, an attendee with visual impairment, is another inspiring member of the group. Corrine and Belinda have developed a personalised program for Michelle, allowing her to participate in one-on-one training with a unique tennis ball that emits a ringing sound, enabling her to locate it by ear. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to thrive on the court, regardless of their abilities.

The next session is scheduled for 6th March 2024, Wednesday, at the same time and location. If you’re interested in joining this vibrant community or learning more about the program, please don’t hesitate to reach out to 4lifeskills. Who knows, you might be the next star on the court, all while reaping the many health benefits that tennis offers!
